'What are you going to do today with this one and precious life' Mary Oliver
Born in 1942 I initially trained and practiced for many years as a Architect. In 1977 a deep need to find myself started a journey of discovery. I began to study Yoga and Meditation in India and the UK and started a private Yoga practice in Southsea in 1983 and continued to teach for 30 years until 2013. In 1983, and for several years after, I pioneered teaching Meditation and Relaxation Therapy at Adult Education Centres and have continued to teach meditation.
My involvement in psychotherapy also started in 1977 and from 1987 I started training at the Chiron Centre, London, in Biodynamic Psychotherapy and at the Karuna Institute in Devon in Core Process Psychotherapy a Contemplative Buddhist informed Psychospirtitual, Body and Psychotherapy training.
'The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step' Lao Tzu
The approaches I work with include Humanistic, Bioenergetics, Gestalt, Body Orientated and Buddhist informed Psychotherapies.
Also I offer Yoga, Mindfulness Meditation, Tibetan Kum Nye Relaxation, Inner Child and Artwork skills.
After 16 years of inner journey, growth and change work in 1993 I became a registered psychotherapist with
the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy (UKCP).
From 1994 I was the Senior Trainer on a Humanistic Psychology and Gestalt Therapy Diploma in Counselling training at Fareham College for several years which became accredited by the British Association Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). I also taught therapies for Portsmouth University, NHS and Mental Health.
I bring to my work over 40 years of experience, skills and knowledge in self development, working with relationship issues, mindfulness, the body and psychosomatics, emotional dynamics and being a whole person.
Therapy is a gradual transforming process towards self realisation, integration of oneself and how to live to our full potential.
What I offer as a psychotherapist is what I have learnt and continue to learn on my inner journey.
I would be pleased to help you on yours.
Our life is not long so it's good to wake up and make the most of it as soon as possible!
Approach
Relationship - Mind - Body - Spirit - Uniqueness
Nowadays there is an enormous range of therapies which can be quite confusing and having worked and learnt from
many I find they can be simplified as below. They are ways to enquire within, to understand oneself and the world around.
'We have to enquire within in order to ever find ourselves'
Relationship
One of the most important research findings about therapy is that it is the quality of the relationship
created between the client and therapist that is the most important aspect, more than the type of therapy chosen.
Our personal difficulties are created by inadequate relationship experiences and that healing has to come about in a positive and enhancing relationship experience. It is the quality of trust created in the therapy relationship that creates the healing process.
The therapist has to feel right for the client.
Uniqueness
'There is no one like you, that makes you special'
Uniqueness is a basic theme which is based on the idea that in order for change to occur an individual has to feel known and accepted. Each individual is unique and therapy seeks to develop abilities to find our own fullest potential through a process of self-actualisation,
For this the therapist has to offer kindness, compassion, congruence, empathy and unconditional positive regard for the individual..
Mind
'Your mind is like a parachute, if it doesn't open it won't work' Frank Zappa
Mindfulness, although a recent popular term, has been a practice to observe our mind that has evolved over many centuries in the Eastern meditative and yoga traditions. I encourage becoming more aware of the way we use our thoughts and our style of thinking. Much of our thinking is repetitive and habitual and, if we can learn and notice our habits, fresh insights and change can begin to happen. Learning to become mindful and be in the here and now, which is reality, is critical for allowing change to happen.
Body
'Your body is precious. It is your vehicle for awareness, treat it with care' Buddha
Our Body contains all that we are, our thoughts, feelings, emotions, senses and our essential breath of life. So often we connect with parts of our being and disconnect with others which can build up a disfunction within. The body develops psychosomatic conflicts that show up in symptons or illness. Tensions in muscles, tissue and joints create stress in the nervous system and we get out of balance. Through body awareness skills we can bring a ease and relaxation to our body.
Body awareness develops sensitivity and an integrating of body and mind, we become whole again, a bodymind.
'Let the soft animal of your body love what it loves' Mary Oliver
Spiritual
'Being and feeling at one in your life is a great moment'
The spiritual is our connection to everything in the world and existence, which we are in constant relationship to each moment consciously or not. Our body, feelings and thoughts often become disconnected or disassociated from the spiritual dimension which we then experience as difficulties. Learning to include this bigger picture can bring a union within ourselves that can be helpful for ourself, family, friends and others.
